The total length is approximately 17–19 cm. As resident or wandering birds, they inhabit the alpine zones and gravelly areas of Northern Honshu and Central Honshu. During the breeding season, males and females form small flocks of several individuals, exhibiting a unique breeding pattern where multiple individuals within the flock mate with each other. Additionally, courtship is performed by the females. Like the Rock Ptarmigans, they are unafraid of humans, allowing close observation.
